How does Hydroxychloroquine work?

Hydroxychloroquine belongs to the class of medications called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD). This mainly works for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The disease is caused by the immune system that attacks the joints. Hydroxychloroquine also works to treat and prevent malaria which has been in demand before for the treatment of the said condition.

For COVID-19

This medication may work with antiviral medicine as a treatment for COVID-19. Hydroxychloroquine which is used for rheumatoid arthritis has been used around the world for decades may be beneficial if taken with an antibiotic mechanism for fighting a coronavirus infection. A study shows that Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin have a real chance to be one of the biggest game-changers in the history of medicine.

Hydroxychloroquine is a potentially less toxic metabolite of the malaria drug that is used to treat certain autoimmune diseases. Studies show that this works by disrupting communications between cells in the immune system. It is also suspected that it helps to mitigate cytokine storms.

How to use Hydroxychloroquine?

Take Hydroxychloroquine for the full prescribed length of time. Do not suddenly stop or change the dose without the consent of your doctor. The dosage will depend on your condition, age, weight, and response to the treatment. Stopping the treatment so soon may lead to infection or a return of the infection.

Your doctor may gradually increase your dose. Once you have been taking it for a while and see improvements, your dose may be lower. Your doctor will work with it to find the best dose for you to lessen the risk of some side effects.

Hydroxychloroquine is taken with food or as directed by your doctor. You may take each dose with a full glass of water. The tablet is swallowed as a whole. Take this prescription regularly to get the best benefit. If you are taking any other medications, take Hydroxychloroquine at least 4 hours before or after the other medicines. These drugs may bind with Hydroxychloroquine which prevents your body from fully absorbing it. Call your doctor at once if your condition does not improve or gets worse.
