Enalapril Maleate

Enalapril Maleate is used for the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already approved this prescription. Enalapril Maleate is a type of medicine called ACE inhibitors.
Hypertension is a long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough. It may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease. Blood pressure is determined both by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure.
You can have high blood pressure or hypertension for years without any symptoms. Even without symptoms, damage to blood vessels and your heart continues and can be detected. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems. High blood pressure generally develops over many years, and it affects nearly everyone eventually. Fortunately, high blood pressure can be easily detected. And once you know you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control it. Most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms, even if blood pressure readings reach dangerously high levels. Several people with high blood pressure may have shortness of breath, headaches, and nosebleeds. But, these signs and symptoms aren’t specific and usually don’t occur until high blood pressure has reached a severe or life-threatening stage.
Heart failure happens when your heart muscle doesn’t pump blood as well as it should. Certain conditions will leave your heart too weak or stiff to fill and pump efficiently. Heart failure can be ongoing or your condition may start suddenly. The signs and symptoms may include:
⦁ Fatigue and weakness
⦁ Shortness of breath when you exert yourself or when you lie down
⦁ Rapid or irregular heartbeat
⦁ Swelling in your legs, ankles and feet
⦁ Persistent cough or wheezing with white or pink blood-tinged phlegm
⦁ Reduced ability to exercise
⦁ Swelling of your abdomen
⦁ Increased need to urinate at night
⦁ Very rapid weight gain from fluid retention
⦁ Difficulty concentrating or decreased alertness
⦁ Lack of appetite
⦁ Nausea
⦁ Sudden and severe shortness of breath or coughing up pink foamy mucus
⦁ Chest pain if your heart failure is caused by a heart attack
Heart failure often develops after other conditions have damaged or weakened your heart. However, the heart doesn’t need to be weakened to cause heart failure. It can also occur if the heart becomes too stiff. This condition can involve the left side (left ventricle), right side (right ventricle) or both sides of your heart. Generally, heart failure begins with the left side, specifically the left ventricle which is your heart’s main pumping chamber.

How does Enalapril Maleate work?
Enalapril Maleate works by blocking the action of a compound in the body called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Usually, ACE produces another compound called angiotensin II as part of the body’s natural control of blood pressure. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to constrict and narrow which increases the pressure inside the blood vessels.
As this drug blocks the action of ACE, it reduces the production of angiotensin II. This means that the blood vessels are allowed to relax and widen. The overall effect of this is a drop in blood pressure, hence Enalapril Maleate can be used to lower high blood pressure.
The reduced pressure within the blood vessels means that the heart doesn’t have to work as hard to pump the blood around the body. This means that ACE inhibitors can also be used to improve the symptoms of heart failure, where the heart is not pumping as efficiently as it should be.
